The Schattenbaum Driver Education (DE) program provides high-quality track experiences where club members can develop real driving skills in a controlled environment. We run multiple events each year at New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ. The goal is simple: help you become a better, safer driver — and have a lot of fun doing it.
Our mission is to make you a better driver. The program is built around education: understanding your car, developing technique, and building confidence over time.
We operate on a closed course, which means no traffic, predictable surfaces, and run-off room. This is not street driving and it’s not racing. It’s the space between them, where you can push your limits in a safe, controlled environment. Even so, car control skills you build on track translate directly to safer street driving.
DE is not racing. There are no timed laps, no head-to-head competition, no points, but also no pressure. It’s a structured learning environment where you drive your car at your comfort level with an experienced instructor in the passenger seat.
You’ll develop skills including:
- Racing lines — turn-in, apex, and track-out points
- Braking and cornering techniques
- Vision and situational awareness
- Passing protocols and responsibilities
- Vehicle control and understanding how your car behaves at its limits
- Track layout and corner identification
How It Works
Anyone with a car and a valid driver’s license can participate. You don’t need prior track experience or a race-prepared car.
Beginners are sorted into the novice run group with in-car instructors, and progress through the groups at their own pace over multiple events. You spend each day alternating between on-track sessions and time in the classroom. Classroom sessions cover theory, safety, and technique.
If you’ve never been on track, read the Beginner’s Guide. It covers everything you need to know before your first event. Even if you have participated in DE events before, there is useful information there for anyone.
Tech Inspection
All cars must pass a technical inspection before participating. See the Tech Inspection Resources page for the inspection form and a list of approved shops.
